Italian President Condemns Worsening Gaza Crisis, Calls for Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday condemned the worsening humanitarian and political turmoil in Gaza as "unacceptable," calling for swift global intervention and engagement from Arab states to resolve the crisis.
During political discussions in Luxembourg, Mattarella stressed the necessity of a "quick reflection" involving Arab nations to find a viable solution to the grave situation unfolding today.
He further emphasized the urgency of halting hostilities, stating, "a ceasefire must be reached immediately and all hostages must be released by Hamas."
Meanwhile, Italy’s regional politics are shifting amid the crisis. The Regional Council of Tuscany passed a motion to halt all institutional cooperation with the Israeli government, citing ongoing "persistent and serious violations of international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip," according to media reports.
This proposal, brought forward by the Democratic Party and backed by Italia Viva, the 5 Star Movement, and Europa Verde, secured 24 votes in favor against seven opposing.
"This motion has a predominantly symbolic value," stated Tuscany’s President Eugenio Giani, "but it includes a strong call for the recognition of the State of Palestine."
The resolution also demands that the Italian government condemn the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration and advocate for suspending economic and trade relations with Israel.
Since October 2023, the Israeli military has maintained a fierce offensive against Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 55,100 Palestinians, the majority being women and children.
Israel’s continued blockade of all Gaza border crossings to humanitarian aid since early March has heightened warnings from aid organizations about a looming famine impacting Gaza’s 2.4 million residents.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice concerning its military campaign in the Gaza Strip.
